A passion for the work of Treasure Coast Hospice runs deep in the soul of Joan O’Keefe. Joan’s passion stems initially from her mother’s involvement as a volunteer with TCH.
Joan’s oldest sister Patti passed away after a battle with cancer in 1980 before hospice care was an option for her. As the years went on, another family member passed away from cancer and their mom saw first-hand the difference when a patient receives hospice care. It was then that she made the decision to become a hospice volunteer when she retired. She volunteered at TCH until her death in 2007.
Joan’s passion was reignited in 2013 when her family used TCH to care for their dad in his final months of life at home, as well as at the In-Patient Unit. After her dad passed away, Joan’s niece benefited greatly from TCH’s children’s grief support services.
Because of her experience with TCH, upon her retirement and relocation to Florida, Joan made the decision to dedicate her time as a volunteer as well.
“Knowing the mission of Treasure Coast Hospice and experiencing how they cared for my family during a terrible time in our lives, I knew I had to give back in a greater way,” she said. “I made a modest contribution in memory of my dad when he passed, but wanted to do more.”
Joan has faithfully served as both an administrative and event volunteer for TCH Foundation, and continues to financially support the organization. She recently received the TCH Above & Beyond Award for her service.
“I know I make an impact now on Treasure Coast Hospice by volunteering and donating,” said Joan, “but by becoming a Legacy Circle member and remembering them in my estate plan, I can continue to support the programs that helped my family so much in our time of need after I’m gone.”
TCH has been serving the community since 1982. We are honored to have been a part of Joan’s life, supporting her and her family when needed through the services we provide.
