The Treasure Coast Hospice Foundation recently received a generous gift from the estate of Robert “Bobby” Todd. He was preceded in death by his wife of more than 50 years, Jacqueline or Jackie as she was known to friends. This is their story.
Bobby was born and raised in Fort Pierce and Jackie was born in Stuart. He was a lifelong employee of the Fort Pierce Utility Authority and she worked in insurance. They purchased a home in Fort Pierce in the mid-1960s where they lived modestly for the rest of their lives.
As they grew older, the Todds discussed what they would do with their assets after they both passed away. Having no children, they decided to leave their estate to charitable organizations that impacted their lives. Half of the estate would go to Polio Plus Program of Rotary International because Bobby suffered from polio as a child, and the other half would be given to Treasure Coast Hospice (TCH) because of the work they do in caring for the community they loved so much.
Initially, Bobby did not stipulate how the gift should be used. However, after he saw the care his wife received at the St. Lucie In-Patient Unit, he wanted to ensure that their money would be designated for the maintenance and improvement of that facility. He was happy to learn his wishes would be honored.
Due to the amount of his donation, Bobby was able to choose an available naming opportunity at TCH. He decided that because of her love of flowers, he would name the gardens on the St. Lucie campus in memory of Jackie.
Their life as husband and wife began in the garden of Jackie’s parents’ home where they held their wedding reception. Because of his gift, their legacy will live on in the newly named Robert P. Todd and Jacqueline C. Todd Garden of Hope and Healing where other patients and families who receive our care can enjoy peace and tranquility.
TCH is grateful for the support of the Todd’s and others who have chosen to become part of the Legacy Circle.
